Vision Pro: Developing for visionOS requires a Mac with Apple Silicon.

As of October 3rd, Apple released Xcode 15.1, and it came with a Disclaimer: Developers building for the Apple Vision Pro (specifically visionOS) requires a Mac with Apple Silicon. This means developers using Macs with Intel can no longer target visionOS while developing apps. Any developers building with Intel will need to consider an upgrade to Apple Silicon.

There are a few implications with this move:

  • Developers with Intel Macs will not be able to develop for the Vision Pro without upgrading which may lead to less adoption of visionOS.
  • Apple may soon require all future Software upgrades for Mac to be on Apple Silicon.

Apple declaring Apple Silicon as a requirement for developing visionOS software might be a sign of a greater move coming soon. Some speculate that macOS Sonoma may be the last operating system to support Intel.
